Every track and field athlete - from a first-year high schooler eyeing state championships to an elite competitor chasing an Olympic Trials qualifier - needs to know the performance standards required to advance. FieldSync's Qualifying Standards page brings together the marks you need for 20+ major competitions across four levels, all in one searchable, filterable view.
What Are Qualifying Standards?
Qualifying standards (sometimes called "entry standards" or "qualifying marks") are minimum performance thresholds set by a meet's governing body. To gain entry into the competition, an athlete must have achieved that mark - or better - during a specified qualifying window. Standards exist to ensure that the competition field is appropriately competitive and that events run within practical time limits.
Different organizations publish standards differently. USA Track & Field lists them by event with separate "A" and "B" standard tiers. The NCAA publishes provisional and automatic qualifying marks. High school state associations publish standards per division. FieldSync normalizes all of these into a single consistent format so you can compare across meets at a glance.
The Four Competition Levels
FieldSync organizes qualifying standards into four levels that cover the entire competitive pathway:
- Youth - AAU Junior Olympics, USATF Youth Nationals, and other youth-level national championships. These competitions typically serve athletes aged 8-18 and have age-group-specific standards.
- High School - State championships, Nike Indoor/Outdoor Nationals, New Balance Nationals, Brooks PR Invitational, and other major high school competitions. Standards vary by state and by meet, with some requiring district/regional qualification and others accepting marks from any sanctioned meet.
- Collegiate - NCAA Division I/II/III Indoor and Outdoor Championships, NAIA Championships, and conference championships. NCAA uses automatic and provisional qualifying standards, while NAIA uses its own entry mark system.
- Professional - USATF Indoor/Outdoor Championships, U.S. Olympic Trials, World Athletics Championships, and Diamond League qualifying. These represent the highest tier of competition and have the most demanding standards.
How to Use the Standards Page
The FieldSync Standards page is designed for quick lookup and comparison:
Season Filter
Toggle between Indoor and Outdoor seasons. Indoor and outdoor standards differ because indoor events use different equipment (e.g., banked tracks, smaller throwing implements) and some events only exist in one season.
Level Pills
Filter by competition level - Youth, High School, Collegiate, or Professional - to narrow the list to the meets relevant to your stage of competition. You can also view all levels at once to see the full picture.
Gender Toggle
Switch between Men's and Women's standards. All marks update instantly to show the correct standards for the selected gender.
Event Filter
Select a specific event - High Jump, Shot Put, Long Jump, etc. - to see only the standards for that event. This is the fastest way to compare your mark against every relevant competition.
Dual Units
Every mark is displayed in both metric and imperial (feet-inches or meters). Whether you train using meters or feet, you'll see the standard you need without any mental conversion.
Meet Details at a Glance
Each competition card on the Standards page includes:
- Meet name and dates - when the competition takes place.
- Location - city and state for planning travel.
- Standard type - "Entry Standard," "Automatic Qualifier," "Provisional," etc., depending on the meet's qualification system.
- Qualifying marks - the actual performance standard for each event, in both units.
- Meet website link - a direct link to the official competition page for registration details, entry deadlines, and additional rules.
- Urgency indicator - competitions that are approaching soon are highlighted so you don't miss the window.
Auto-Removal of Past Competitions
The Standards page automatically removes competitions whose dates have passed. You'll always see only current and future competitions - no stale data to sort through. This is especially useful during the season when new meets are approaching and old ones have already concluded.
From Standards to Goals
Once you've identified a qualifying standard you want to target, you can use FieldSync's Goal Tracking feature to set that standard as a personal goal. Choose the meet, event, and standard type, and FieldSync will track your progress automatically - showing how close your current personal best is to the target, with visual progress bars and performance charts.
After every competition that uses FieldSync for scoring, you'll receive automatic notifications with your updated progress toward each goal, including a breakdown of which standards you've hit and which you're still working toward.
Planning Your Season
Qualifying standards are most useful when you use them to plan backward from your target competition. Here's how coaches and athletes typically use the Standards page:
- Identify your ultimate goal - which competition do you want to qualify for?
- Check the standard - what mark do you need to hit?
- Assess the gap - how far is your current PB from the standard?
- Set intermediate goals - break the gap into smaller milestones across the season.
- Track progress - use FieldSync's goal tracking to monitor improvement meet by meet.
By combining the Standards page with Goal Tracking, you get a complete picture of where you stand and what you need to do to get where you want to be.
